I suspect someone will mention the possibility of taking a level or two in hexblade to make the build SAD. I would recommend a dip no deeper than 7 levels into sorcerer for 4th level spells. This makes up for one of the sneak attack dice lost from a deep dip into sorcerer. Choose fire for greenflame blade, or see if your DM would allow you to choose a thunder dragon origin to empower booming blade. I would recommend the draconic sorcerer subclass, with its permanent mage armor and damage increase to an elemental damage type. This dip also incentives the player to invest in charisma rather than intelligence (pick spells without saves from the wizard spell list, or convince your DM to allow you to key all your spells of charisma) which is useful for talking your way out of or into situations. This spell is very useful with the varied ability checks that can be required while doing rogue shenanigans. There aren't many spells on the sorcerer list that aren't on the wizard list, but an important one to note is Enhance Ability at level 2. While you do get less spells known (a 2nd level wizard can have 8 spells in their book even without taking into account any copied from scrolls - you would need 7 levels in sorcerer to match this), you do get some extra cantrips to play with. This also solves the problem of many gish builds, where you don't combine casting and attacking in the same turn so don't feel like a true spellsword. This increases your burst damage to above a rogue of similar character level. Using quickened spell hold person, you can autocrit targets. The Sorcerer solves some of these problems. On top of this, the spells you take won't be used in combat most of the time due to you taking the attack action (or the cast a spell action for a SCAG cantrip) on most turns. Every level that you take in wizard, you don't get to scale at the thing you do best - burst damage. However, some players want more in the way of magic, and this is where the multiclass gets worse in my opinion. A common and good solution is to dip two levels into bladesinger wizard. Many people who play the Arcane trickster rogue archetype find themselves wanting more in the way of magic.
